Does Acupuncture For Infertility Work?

It has been shown again and again in studies that acupuncture increases pregnancy rates.

One case study published in the National Institutes of Health looked at two 28 years old couple who were unable to conceive a child for a year because of infertility. They were treated with acupuncture for fertility. The male received 4 treatments to improve sperm quality and the women received 7 treatments which she eventually conceived after three months. With that, they conclude that acupuncture as a treatment for infertility shows great results both in men and women. Acupuncture can be considered as a successful treatment in restoring fertility in the patients, by improving the sperm quality and ovaries function and balancing the endocrine system and hormones [1].

Acupuncture With Other Fertility Treatments

Acupuncture for female infertility can help with getting pregnant. But, it can also help with other fertility treatments. In some cases, your reproductive endocrinologist might recommend acupuncture for female infertility in addition to other treatments because of what it can do. It was found in some studies that acupuncture significantly increases the success rate of assisted reproductive therapies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI) compared to the treatment without acupuncture.

In 2002, a German study [2] tested a control group of 80 women who underwent just IVF alone. And another group of 80 women that went through IVF and were given acupuncture treatments at the same time. The group that received acupuncture at the same time had almost double the pregnancy success rate of the control group!

In the US study in 2014, it was documented that 51% of women who underwent both acupuncture and in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment became pregnant. Whereas the control group of women who did not undergo acupuncture treatments, only 36% became pregnant.

In 2003, Weil Medical Center of Cornell University called for a study of acupuncture as a fertility treatment, citing its numerous benefits associated with reducing infertility in women. An article provided a summary of research that supports acupuncture potential benefits for fertility treatment, including the stimulation of increased uterine blood flow and fertility hormones.

ZA study compared pregnancy rates in a total of 160 patients undergoing IVF. Acupuncture was performed in 80 patients 25 minutes before and after embryo transplantation. Clinical pregnancy rate for the acupuncture group (42.5%) was significantly higher than the control group (26.3%).

How Does Acupuncture Treatments For Fertility Work?

The general theory of acupuncture in Chinese medicine is that proper physiological function and health depend on the circulation of Qi (energy flow) through a network of meridians.

This network connects every organ and part of the body, providing balance, regulation, and coordination of physiological processes.

Stimulation of the appropriate acupuncture points of certain meridians through acupuncture treatments naturally strengthens reproduction function.

Dr. Fu uses Differentiation Principle of Chinese Medicine Theory to diagnose the patient’s body pattern and then make a treatment plan. Adjusting the patient’s Qi, Blood, Yin, Yang, Cold and Heat in each phase of the menstrual cycle by acupuncture and herbal medicine helps to reduce infertility in the patient.

What Does Western Medicine Say?

In Western medicine, the acupuncture needles have shown to stimulate and naturally increase the release of B-endorphin and serotonin in the body which vitalize the sympathetic nervous system and improve the body’s overall function.

Either Western or Eastern medicine explanation, the earlier you visit our acupuncture center for reproductive health found in Irvine, CA, the better your results.

Yelp review for infertility

I began seeing Dr. Fu since in February for fertility. My first couple of months were focused on regulating my cycle. I started seeing improvement immediately, with continued progress every month. After about 3 months of focusing solely on normalizing everything, Dr. Fu shifted his focus to fertility. One month later I was pregnant.

Along the way, Dr. Fu and his staff were thorough, thoughtful and kind. I can’t say enough good things. When everything shut down in March due to Covid, Dr. Fu set up a medical tent in his backyard as an option to patients who required ongoing and regular treatment. His staff also printed my BBT charts before each and every visit so that Dr. Fu could monitor and adjust his treatment accordingly. I am so grateful for Dr. Fu and his team!

Yelp review for fertility

I highly recommend Dr. Fu if you want to try acupuncture. I was struggling to get pregnant for two years. The infertility specialist diagnosed me as unexplained infertility. I was skeptical of acupuncture before, but at that moment I decided to give a try. Dr. Fu is very professional, knowledgeable and patient. He answered my every question thoroughly and suggested the diet to get my body ready for pregnancy. After four months’ treatment and taking herbs, I was pregnant. I very appreciate Dr. Fu’s effort and his encouragement. Now I want to have the second child, and come back for the treatment. His staff are super friendly and quick to arrange the appointment. The office is very clean and I feel very relaxed during the treatment.

Additional Info

When people think of the needles, they expect some pain involved. But in reality, there is hardly any pain and most people who do come for acupuncture feel more relaxed than pain. This is because acupuncture can be used as an alternative to medicine to treat different types of discomfort in the body. In addition, the needles are really thin and only target acupoints in the body that reliefs pain and discomfort. If you do feel any pain during your appointment, please tell our acupuncturist and they’ll make some adjustments.
