Muscle Pain Information

Everyone goes through muscle pain. It’s been found that 25.3 million people are experiencing daily pain [1] and 23.4 million reports that they’re experiencing a lot of pain.

What Helps Muscle Pain?

While there are a lot of home remedies you can use to alleviate muscle pain, there are times when your muscle pain won’t go away. And with chronic pain, over-the-counter pain medication just dilutes the pain and hides the symptom, it doesn’t solve the root of the problem. It’s important to go see a medical professional afterward. They will recommend various things to help out with your muscle pain. One complimentary treatment they might recommend is acupuncture for muscle pain.

What Is Acupuncture For Muscle Pain?

Acupuncture is a type of treatment under traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is a popular form of therapy when it comes to dealing with pain. In TCM, it’s believed that an imbalance in the body’s life energy called chi or qi is the root of diseases. By using acupuncture to target the body’s acupuncture points also known as acupoints, it can restore balance to the body’s life energy. As a result, one will be healed from their symptoms and alleviated from pain.

Acupuncture Info

An acupuncture session is about 40 minutes to about an hour. It could change depending on the condition you are being treated for. You will also receive a medical diagnosis and some questions about how things are going before your treatment. If it’s your first acupuncture treatment, it’ll take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. This is because you’ll have to fill out a few forms and you’ll have to explain the muscle pain you have been experiencing. You’ll get questions like when did it start, how long, where do you feel it, what do you think the cause is, etc.

You’ll have to go to multiple sessions so you receive the full healing effect of acupuncture. The number and how often you need to go is decided by your acupuncturist. You will usually go once or twice a week for a few weeks to see how the treatment is affecting you. After your acupuncturist sees progression in your health, they will change your schedule to once every few weeks or a few months. If you start to get busier, your acupuncturist will schedule your appointments when you’re most free.

It may seem scary at first but you’ll change your mind when you get there. The needles are really thin. They are as thin as a strand of hair. Also, because the needles aren’t inserted pass a thin layer of skin, you’ll only feel a slight pinch. It may feel different depending on the sensitivity of your skin but don’t be afraid to tell your acupuncturist if you feel any discomfort. They’ll gladly adjust the position of the needles so you don’t feel any pain.

BRING A COPY OF YOUR MEDICAL HISTORY

The first way to prepare for your acupuncture appointment is to remember your medical history or if you don’t remember, bring a copy of it. It will be helpful if it’s your first time since you’ll be filling out some forms and answering questions about your medical history. With your medical history, it’ll help your acupuncturist decide the best treatments for you. If you have been coming frequently, it’s important to tell your acupuncturist any new changes to your medical history. It will be helpful if your acupuncturist needs to adjust your treatments so it works with any changes your doctor makes.

EAT BEFOREHAND

The second thing to prepare for your acupuncture appointment is to eat something light. Your appointment will be about an hour and if it’s your first time, it will take longer. At that time, you may start to get hungry and be distracted from feeling the healing effect of acupuncture treatment. In some cases, you may start to feel lightheaded and might even faint during your session. For effective treatment and your health, it is recommended to eat beforehand.

TRY NOT TO DRINK TOO MUCH CAFFEINE

The last way to prepare is you shouldn’t drink a lot of caffeine before coming to your acupuncture appointment. Why? Caffeine is a stimulant, and it will affect your fight or flight response. It will be harder to relax and you can’t help but move a lot. It’s preferred that this doesn’t happen. Instead, your acupuncturist prefers that you are relaxed and calm to feel the alleviating effects of the treatment. It’s also important since it also involves acupuncture needles being inserted into your skin. If you’re going to drink a lot of caffeine, drink it a couple of hours before your appointment.
