How Acupuncture Reduces IVF Side Effects

If you’re in the middle of an IVF (in vitro fertilization) cycle, the day-to-day side effects is often the hardest part.

The bloating, the headaches, the mood swings from hormone injections, the exhaustion of the two-week wait.

In our Irvine practice, many of the patients we see for acupuncture during IVF first come in because they simply want to feel better while going through fertility treatment.

Side-effect relief is one of the areas where acupuncture has the most to offer patients undergoing IVF. Here’s how it works, stage by stage.

Why IVF Takes a Toll on Your Body

A typical IVF cycle asks your body to do something it never does naturally: mature a dozen or more follicles at once instead of just one.

Whether your fertility journey involves PCOS, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility, most cycles move through the same stages: ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, embryo transfer, and the two-week wait.

Each stage comes with its own side effects.

During stimulation, hormone levels climb far above what a natural cycle produces.

Common side effects of IVF medications include nausea, hot flashes, headaches, abdominal pain, and bruising from the injections themselves, along with temporarily enlarged ovaries.

After retrieval and transfer, bloating, cramping, constipation, and breast tenderness are common.

Add in the emotional weight of the process, and it’s no surprise that IVF is often described as draining for the body and mind. That matches what patients tell us every week.

Common IVF Side Effects Acupuncture Can Help With

Most articles about acupuncture and IVF focus on success rates. We find it more useful to walk through an IVF cycle the way our patients actually experience it: stage by stage. And we will go over at each stage how acupuncture treatment can help.

During Ovarian Stimulation

This is when medication side effects peak. Patients commonly deal with bloating, nausea, headaches, fatigue, irritability, and soreness around injection sites.

Acupuncture can help settle the digestive system. Stimulation of a single wrist point has been shown in a large Cochrane review to reduce nausea and vomiting. And other points calm the nervous system and ease tension-type headaches.

In our practice, patients mid-stimulation often report that treatments take the edge off the “overfull,” heavy feeling that builds as the ovaries respond.

After Egg Retrieval

Egg retrieval is a minor procedure, but your ovaries have just been working overtime. Cramping and feelings of fullness or pressure are expected for a few days, and some patients retain fluid.

Gentle acupuncture in this window focuses on easing cramping, supporting circulation, and helping the body process that extra fluid.

One important caution from our side: mild bloating and stomach upset after retrieval are common, but rapid weight gain or shortness of breath can signal a severe form of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).

That is a medical issue for your fertility clinic — call them first. Acupuncture is a support for the mild, expected discomforts, not a treatment for OHSS.

Around Embryo Transfer and the Two-Week Wait

Once the embryo transfer is done, the physical side effects usually quiet down. However, the mental side effects take over. Anxiety, poor sleep, and obsessive symptom-checking are almost universal during the two-week wait.

This is where the research on how patients feel is most encouraging. A randomized controlled trial found that women receiving acupuncture reported reduced anxiety following embryo transfer.

And a 2025 study of nearly 1,900 acupuncture treatments delivered alongside IVF at a U.S. academic fertility center found that a single session measurably reduced patients’ anxiety, stress, and pain on patient-reported scales.

We see the same pattern in our treatment room. Patients often arrive wired and leave calm enough to nap. For more on this stage specifically, see our article on acupuncture after embryo transfer.

You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through the side effects — steady support is just a text away.

How Does Acupuncture Reduce These Side Effects?

Three mechanisms explain most of what we see in practice.

Better blood flow. Research going back decades shows acupuncture can improve circulation to the reproductive organs. In one well-known study of infertile women, a course of acupuncture significantly reduced blood flow impedance in the uterine arteries, an effect the researchers linked to calming of the sympathetic nervous system.

Better pelvic blood flow supports the uterus and ovaries while they’re under the heaviest demand of the cycle.

A calmer nervous system. Inserting fine needles into specific points on the body prompts a shift out of “fight-or-flight” mode and stimulates the release of the body’s own pain-relieving and mood-regulating chemicals.

This is why one treatment can ease a headache, settle nausea, and improve sleep at the same time… they share the same stressed-out wiring.

Nothing added to your protocol. IVF medications are precisely dosed and timed. Acupuncture supports how you feel without adding another drug to the mix. Not adding drugs is exactly what most fertility patients and their doctors want.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective on IVF Side Effects

In Traditional Chinese Medicine terms, IVF stimulation asks the body to build an extraordinary amount in a very short time.

From a TCM perspective, that rapid buildup followed by the sudden shifts of retrieval and transfer tends to generate heat (hot flashes, headaches, irritability), qi stagnation (bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness), and disrupted fluid metabolism (water retention and puffiness).

So rather than chasing each symptom separately, we treat the pattern underneath. Moving stagnant qi, clearing heat, and supporting the digestive system so fluids move the way they should.

This is also why treatment in our practice changes from week to week. The pattern during stimulation is not the same pattern as the two-week wait, so the acupuncture points shouldn’t be the same either.
