Health Tip of The Week: Acupuncture and Herbs for Eczema

Eczema is one of the most common skin issues. About 3.5% of the population suffer from eczema. Symptoms of eczema are red, dry and itchy skin that is easily found near the joint creases of the body, such as the elbows and back sides of the knees (although it can appear anywhere). Rashes and blisters can also occur.

Using steroid to treat eczema can get fast temporary pain relief, but it will come back after a couple weeks or months and be worse than before. Thus patients need to take stronger steroids to achieve the same effect as before. This will continue happen until their medical providers says they cannot give them anymore steroids because of the side effects. This leaves those sufferers not knowing what to do.

Eczema patient’s body has strong heat and dampness, heat cause red, dry and itchy skin and rashes coming out; dampness cause blisters coming out. The strong heat in the body is like the water boiling in the pot. using steroids is like using a lid to cover it, you will feel the heat diminished right away, but in fact it is still boiling inside. When you stop using steroids, it’s like the lid is moved away, the heat will come out with heightened severity.

The right way to solve this problem is not covering with lid, but is turning down the heat of the oven so to speak. Like acupuncture and herbal medicine reduce the heat and dampness from inside of body

Health Tip of The Week: Acupuncture for Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder patients suffer the severe shoulder pain  and limited R.O.M. (range of motion). Most of patients get injured, and then do not receive proper treatment right away. This causes the condition to get worse: more painful and more limited.

For a hypothetical example, consider PatientA. At the beginning, pain scale for PatientA is 2/10, after 2 years, it increases to 7/10. At the beginning, R.O.M. abduction for PatientA was 160 degrees, after 2 years, it becomes reduced to only 30 degrees.

Western medicine doctor like to use cortisone injection, but cortisone injections just temporarily relieves the pain, after couple weeks it comes back with even more severity.

Acupuncture can truly solve this problem with no side effect. Get acupuncture as early as possible to prevent this problem from getting worse. The earlier you get treatments, the less treatments you’ll need.

Health Tip of The Week: Prescription of Herbal Medicine (1)

Before herbal medicine can be prescribed, patient must undergo comprehensive examination and diagnosis by doctor to determine patient’s physical constitution through taking the pulse, checking the tongue, checking the complexion, and inquiring patient’s physical and medical history. The herbal medicine prescribed is personalized and tailored to the patient’s special needs.

The effect of herbal medicine is the same as predicted by the Wave Process Theory for acupuncture treatment. A patient should continue taking herbal medicine on schedule until fully recovered. Stopping half way; taking medicine intermittently; or postponing taking medicine will reduce or even nullify the effect of herbal medicine.

Health Tip of The Week: The Difference Between Western and Chinese Medicine (2)

With Chinese herbal medicine, the prescription taken was adjusted accordingly by the condition of a body.   When the symptoms and health condition improves, the less amount of medication is required. The patient’s health condition gets better gradually as body’s constitution improves.    As a result, the treatment by Chinese medicine is usually with a better long-term result as it allows patient undergo changes day by day with decreased amount of medication and until the body get recovered ultimately and no longer require any medication.

Health Tip of The Week: Acupuncture and Herbs for Vertigo

Vertigo refers to symptoms of balance loss and the sensation that everything around you is spinning.
It often occurs along with blurred vision, sensory confusion, nausea, vomiting, perspiration or even fainting.

In Chinese Medicine Theory, vertigo is related to Qi/Blood deficiency, Dampness accumulation, Liver Yang rising or Kidney Essence deficiency. The most frequent pattern is Qi deficiency which causes dampness accumulation. Dampness accumulates in the meridian around the inner ear area, then disrupts and blocks the flow of Qi; this causes loss of balance and the sensation that everything around you is spinning.

Treating vertigo with acupuncture and herbs, I would choose SJ Meridian’s acupuncture points, because SJ Meridian connects the ears and is good at clearing dampness. Also, I would use herbal medicine that increases Qi and reduces dampness. Like I mentioned before, stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points through acupuncture treatments help restore sufficient, continuous, even flow of Qi through the body, thereby restoring health and balance, while also relieving symptoms.

Health Tip of The Week: Explanations of Acupuncture Treatment Process

Acupuncture treatments can be differentiated on the basis of two conditions:

  1. Acute conditions:The earlier the treatments are received after injury, the better the results will be. Three to five treatments may be sufficient.
  2. Chronic conditions (illness postponed for a long time without treatments): Under such condition, treatment is divided into four stages as illustrated below:

Stage 1: Intensive Tx Period: 3 Txs/week, until about 60% recovered.

Stage 2: Continued Tx Period: 2 Tx/week, until about 90% recovered.

Stage 3: Recovery Period: 1 Tx/week, until the condition does not      recur again during this period of time.

Stage 4: Observation and Maintenance Period: After you have recovered from the condition, you must take good care of your body, especially the weak point that needs special care.   Just as you need to perform annual car maintenance and undergo a dental check-up, you also need to schedule appointment for your check-up after the treatment. If a patient’s (including weight-loss patients) condition recur, he or she would need to come back to receive treatment as soon as possible

Q: I am here for infertility and why is doctor asking questions such as how is my sleeping condition, digestive system etc, that seems to be unrelated to my visit?

A: Chinese Medicine treat patient by understanding the comprehensive whole picture of patient’s body’s constitution and thus it is important to ask and know detail about patient’s health condition so that doctor can do the differential diagnosis and treatment of Chinese Medicine for the patient.

Health Tip of the Week: Acupuncture and Herbs for Insomnia

Insomnia ranks high, right behind the common cold, stomach disorders and headaches as a reason why people seek a doctor’s help.  There are about one-third of adults complained that they woke up in the midnight and couldn’t continue their sleep.

No matter if you can not continue the sleep in the midnight or can not fall asleep at the beginning, acupuncture and herbs are all very helpful to relieve the condition.

There is the theory of Yin-Yang in Chinese medicine. Yang is like the day time, sun, hot, fire, dry… Yin is like the night time, moon, cold, water, wet… If Yin and Yang are balance in your body, you will feel comfortable, peaceful and healthy. If Yin is too low (Yin deficiency), you will feel too much Yang (Heat) in your body, the heat will disrupt your sleep.

Having a good night sleep will increase the Yin. On the contrary, insomnia will cause your Yin deficiency, so your condition will be getting worse, this is a vicious circle.

If you are suffered from insomnia , you need to get help as soon as possible to change your sleep disorder.

Acupuncture and herbs work by increasing Yin and reducing heat in the body to treat this condition. They are the natural ways to release your insomnia with no side effect at all.

Health Tip of the Week: Rest or Exercise

Q: Some people hear from their friends or some medical staff that it is necessary to work through the pain of an injury by continuation physical activities and doing therapy.  The saying goes that without physical activity/ therapy muscle will atrophy and pain will persist.  There is also another saying that using supportive braces like a back brace will cause an overreliance on the braces.
A: In general, for conditions such as acute tendonitis, it is better to rest during the preliminary stages of acupuncture treatment.  If physical activity and therapy is continued during the early stages of recovery, it will not get the necessary rest, which may turn it from an acute to a chronic condition.  This makes it harder to treat.   Irritating a cut will only delay its healing and the same principal applies to the healing of muscle and tendons.  Wearing braces is also important during the preliminary stages of an injury because it helps lower the chances of a reinjury.
