Health Tip of the Week: Rest or Exercise

Q: Some people hear from their friends or some medical staff that it is necessary to work through the pain of an injury by continuation physical activities and doing therapy.  The saying goes that without physical activity/ therapy muscle will atrophy and pain will persist.  There is also another saying that using supportive braces like a back brace will cause an overreliance on the braces.
A: In general, for conditions such as acute tendonitis, it is better to rest during the preliminary stages of acupuncture treatment.  If physical activity and therapy is continued during the early stages of recovery, it will not get the necessary rest, which may turn it from an acute to a chronic condition.  This makes it harder to treat.   Irritating a cut will only delay its healing and the same principal applies to the healing of muscle and tendons.  Wearing braces is also important during the preliminary stages of an injury because it helps lower the chances of a reinjury.

Health Tip of the Week: Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are completely different from injection needles used by Western Medicine.  The injection needles used by Western Medicine are generally bigger and the injections are targeted on area such as big blood vessels so they are painful.  Modern acupuncture needles are ultra-fine and quite flexible like hairs.  They are inserted on acupoints where they are at specific locations that are between muscles not big blood vessels, so they are not painful.  When inserted, patient has just a little sensation of soreness, numbness, distension, and or tingling.

Health Tip of the Week:Relieve an Irritated Throat

You can treat an irritated throat by gargling with salt water at the very beginning of a cold to help reduce swelling and
relive discomfort.
To make salt water, fill a half glass of water and mix in 1 teaspoon of salt.
Gargle with salt water and spit it out.  Wait for 5 minutes, and then gargle with normal water and spit it out.
This is a good way to soothe an irritated throat and prevent the cold from getting worse.

Health Tip of the Week: R.I.C.E. and Acupuncture

What should you do when you sprain your ankle during exercise?

Keep it in your mind: R.I.C.E.

When you get acute injury, don’t forget using R.I.C.E. – “Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.”   That is immediately rest the area, apply ice, compression and elevation.

Don’t underestimate the power of R.I.C.E. because acute injury comes with inflammation – redness, swelling, heat and pain.

R.I.C.E. is a good way of anti-inflammation at the beginning of acute injury.   Any stretch, therapeutic exercise or applying heat will let your condition get worse.

Receiving good acupuncture treatments as soon as possible, you will find the amazing effect of it.

Health Tip of the Week: Soothing Pain – Apply Ice or Heat

My patient asked me “I sprained my ankle yesterday, so I applied a heat pack to my ankle. After a moment, I felt my condition getting worse, more painful, more swollen and more red. But I remembered last year I had lower back pain and I used a heat pack and it helped!”

To use ice or heat?

It depends on your pain. Generally, if it is acute pain, use ice in the first two days and then use heat.

If it is chronic pain, use heat. But after 2 days, if it is still inflamed, you still need to use ice.

Whenever you apply heat and feel uncomfortable, stop it and change to ice. This is a more accurate way to determine wheter or not you should apply ice or heat.

Health Tip of The Week: Neck Pain -Take A Break

The neck needs a rest from constant sitting for example: sitting at computer, sitting at the desk, watching TV……..

Your head weights approximately 8 pounds which is a lot of weight for the neck to support. In the same posture it will often cause a lot of pressure on the neck muscles.

Make sure to periodically stand up and walk around.

Some of my patients asked me: Why does it help? Even when I stand up and walk around, my head is still on my neck.

Yes, we can not take off our heads. But sitting in the same posture, your neck contracts the same neck muscles to maintain this posture. When standing up and walking around, the neck will let those muscles relax and contract the other neck muscles!
