Health Tip of The Week: Prescription of Herbal Medicine (1)

Before herbal medicine can be prescribed, patient must undergo comprehensive examination and diagnosis by doctor to determine patient’s physical constitution through taking the pulse, checking the tongue, checking the complexion, and inquiring patient’s physical and medical history. The herbal medicine prescribed is personalized and tailored to the patient’s special needs. The effect of herbal medicine is the same as predicted by the Wave Process Theory for acupuncture treatment. A patient should continue taking herbal medicine on schedule until fully recovered. Stopping half way; taking medicine intermittently; or postponing taking medicine will reduce or even nullify the effect of herbal medicine. ……to be continued Dr. Chun-Ming Fu If you find this useful don’t forget to SHARE IT with your friends! :D And make sure to Follow Us on Twitter and Like Us on Facebook to receive important news, discounts, and health tips like this

Health Tip of The Week: The Difference Between Western and Chinese Medicine (1)

The important difference between Western and Chinese medicine is that the Chinese medicine uses different approach to treat the source of medical problem(s) by understand human body’s constitution and activates body’s self healing process whereas Western medicine only diagnose and treat the symptoms regardless the body constitution.  With conventional Western medicine, it focuses on removing the symptoms and patient may show or experience “instant” improvement after taking the medication in the beginning of treatment.  But the patient usually requires medication for certain period of time.   If the symptom(s) persist or longer treatment requires, more medications may be taken.   If the medication stops during the treatment, the symptom(s) may persist or worsen and some patient may develop side-effect or become addiction or dependence on medication. ……to be continued Dr. Chun-Ming Fu If you find this useful don’t forget to SHARE IT with your friends! :D And make sure to Follow Us on Twitter and Like Us on Facebook to receive important news, discounts, and health tips like this

Health Tip of The Week: Acupuncture and Herbs for Vertigo

Vertigo refers to symptoms of balance loss and the sensation that everything around you is spinning. It often occurs along with blurred vision, sensory confusion, nausea, vomiting, perspiration or even fainting. In Chinese Medicine Theory, vertigo is related to Qi/Blood deficiency, Dampness accumulation, Liver Yang rising or Kidney Essence deficiency. The most frequent pattern is Qi deficiency which causes dampness accumulation. Dampness accumulates in the meridian around the inner ear area, then disrupts and blocks the flow of Qi; this causes loss of balance and the sensation that everything around you is spinning. Treating vertigo with acupuncture and herbs, I would choose SJ Meridian’s acupuncture points, because SJ Meridian connects the ears and is good at clearing dampness. Also, I would use herbal medicine that increases Qi and reduces dampness. Like I mentioned before, stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points through acupuncture treatments help restore sufficient, continuous, even flow of Qi through the body, thereby restoring health and balance, while also relieving symptoms. Health Tip of The Week: Explanations of Acupuncture Treatment Process

Acupuncture treatments can be differentiated on the basis of two conditions:
  1. Acute conditions:The earlier the treatments are received after injury, the better the results will be. Three to five treatments may be sufficient.
  2. Chronic conditions (illness postponed for a long time without treatments): Under such condition, treatment is divided into four stages as illustrated below:
Stage 1: Intensive Tx Period: 3 Txs/week, until about 60% recovered. Stage 2: Continued Tx Period: 2 Tx/week, until about 90% recovered. Stage 3: Recovery Period: 1 Tx/week, until the condition does not      recur again during this period of time. Stage 4: Observation and Maintenance Period: After you have recovered from the condition, you must take good care of your body, especially the weak point that needs special care.   Just as you need to perform annual car maintenance and undergo a dental check-up, you also need to schedule appointment for your check-up after the treatment. If a patient’s (including weight-loss patients) condition recur, he or she would need to come back to receive treatment as soon as possible Dr. Chun-Ming Fu If you find this useful don’t forget to SHARE IT with your friends! :D And make sure to Follow Us on Twitter and Like Us on Facebook to receive important news, discounts, and health tips like this

Health Tip of the Week: Why do you need to get treated as soon as possible?

A: If you have sprained, pulled your muscle, felt any pain or have an acute condition, you would need to get treated as soon as possible when symptoms just developed. It will only take about three to five treatments to get fully recovered.  But when you delay or receive inappropriate treatment, the problem may become chronic.  In this case, the number of treatment required increases and treatment time may be extended. Treating your sickness is just like repairing a hole on your cloth, you need to get treated while your problem is small just like to repair the hole while it is small. If you ignore your condition, the problem, just like the hole on your cloth, becomes bigger and more difficult to treat or repair.  As described in handbook About Acupuncture How does Acupuncture work?, any pain or ill-health results when the flow of Qi through body is disrupted or blocked.  When the blockage remains in your body for a long time, it is more difficult and takes a longer to treat. Acupuncture treatment is to help the flow of Qi through a network of channels just like removing the clog in the water pipes.  Stimulation of the appropriate acupoints through acupuncture treatments helps to restore sufficient, continuous and even flow of Qi and other nutrients throughout the body, thereby restoring health and balance to the body, while relieving pain and other symptoms.  When you have blockage in your body, you feel the pain.  The sooner you get treated, the easier it is to remove the blockage from your body.  Thus it is strongly recommended that you get an intensive treatment when symptoms just develop to obtain an optimal treatment effect. After fully recovered, the best way to maintain your health is to take care of any health problem as early as possible.  Make sure to take care of your body’s health just like maintaining your car and follow the doctor’s advice for any follow-up visit. Health Tip of The Week: What You Need To Do Prior To Your Acupuncture Appointment?

The main difference between acupuncture treatment and western medicine is that acupuncture treatment uses a natural approach to treat the source of medical problem(s) or pain. It does so by understanding each person’s body constitution and treating each person by stimulating the acupoints of the body to activate the body’s self-healing process and increase Qi and blood circulation.  Please keep in mind that everyone’s body condition is different and only you know how your body feels, the location of your pain, and medical condition(s).  Thus, it is recommended that you make note of any pain or information related to your medical condition(s) prior to your appointment. Help yourself by helping your doctor know you better.

For patients with pain:  Make note of the location of your pain prior to each appointment and inform doctor during your appointment, use one finger to locate your pain point as precise as possible to help you get better sooner. For patients with chronic condition: the cause or the source of medical problem(s) can be traced.  Please provide any related information to your symptoms in as much detail as possible so that doctor can better understand and evaluate your lifestyle or any of your habits that may be related to your medical problem(s). Doctor will then provide you with suggestions and recommendations for changes to any habit that may be contributing to your medical problems(s) based on the information you provided to help you live healthier and with a better quality of life for the future. For other medical problem(s):  Do your best to prepare a detailed summary of your health condition from the time of your last treatment to your current appointment.  This will help doctor understand you better and provide an appropriate treatment or medication. -Dr. Chun-Ming Fu If you find this useful don’t forget to SHARE IT with your friends! :D And make sure to Follow Us on Twitter and Like Us on Facebook to receive important news, discounts, and health tips like this

Health Tip of the Week: Acupuncture for Headache

More than 45 million Americans get headaches time and time again. About 18 million of them suffer migraines. If you have been suffering from severe headache for 5 years, 10 years, 20 years or 30 years, feel your condition worsen, and increasing your dosage of painkillers one after another. Try acupuncture treatment for your headache! Acupuncture is able to solve your problem completely, using the natural way to release your headache with no side effect at all. Acupuncture works by stimulating acu-points to normalize the circulation of Qi and blood. I use different acu-points of meridian for different types of headache. For example, I use Shao-Yang meridian for temple headache. This way I can heal the headache most effectively. Duke University researchers found out acupuncture treatment is more effective than medication in reducing the severity and frequency of choronic headaches. -Dr. Chun-Ming Fu If you find this useful don’t forget to SHARE IT with your friends! :D And make sure to Follow Us on Twitter and Like Us on Facebook to receive important news, discounts, and health tips like this

Health Tip of the Week: Rest or Exercise

Q: Some people hear from their friends or some medical staff that it is necessary to work through the pain of an injury by continuation physical activities and doing therapy.  The saying goes that without physical activity/ therapy muscle will atrophy and pain will persist.  There is also another saying that using supportive braces like a back brace will cause an overreliance on the braces.
A: In general, for conditions such as acute tendonitis, it is better to rest during the preliminary stages of acupuncture treatment.  If physical activity and therapy is continued during the early stages of recovery, it will not get the necessary rest, which may turn it from an acute to a chronic condition.  This makes it harder to treat.   Irritating a cut will only delay its healing and the same principal applies to the healing of muscle and tendons.  Wearing braces is also important during the preliminary stages of an injury because it helps lower the chances of a reinjury.

Health Tip of the Week: R.I.C.E. and Acupuncture

What should you do when you sprain your ankle during exercise? Keep it in your mind: R.I.C.E. When you get acute injury, don’t forget using R.I.C.E. – “Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.”   That is immediately rest the area, apply ice, compression and elevation. Don’t underestimate the power of R.I.C.E. because acute injury comes with inflammation – redness, swelling, heat and pain. R.I.C.E. is a good way of anti-inflammation at the beginning of acute injury.   Any stretch, therapeutic exercise or applying heat will let your condition get worse.   Receiving good acupuncture treatments as soon as possible, you will find the amazing effect of it.

New Testimonial: Tendonitis

Dear Dr. Fu, I was so scared in the beginning and didn’t have faith in acupuncture which could possibly cure my foot pain diagnosed as Tendonitis. At the first time, you had been so nice and patient to explain what will happen and how should I feel when niddles went in. As a result, I feel much relaxed and truly not as bad as I thought. He also helped me with a letter of diagnosis so that I could have rest of my foot for 2 weeks of PE in the school. So, my foot healed completely within 3 weeks after 9 treatments. I would like thank you for taking good care of my foot in writing. I believe you will help more people with your needles. lol  🙂 Oxxxx Kxx, Nov. 11th, 2011 (7th Grade in the middle school)
