Health Tip of The Week: Acupuncture and Herbs for Menopause Discomfort

During menopause, some women may suffer considerable discomfort, while others do not experience any discomfort. Through years of experience treating menopause discomfort for my patients, I have seen that most menopause suffering patients’ body constitutions are Yin deficiency. There is the theory of Yin-Yang in Chinese medicine. Yang is like the day time, sun, hot, fire, dry………. . Yin is like the night time, moon, cold, water, wet………. . If Yin and Yang are balance in your body, you will feel comfortable, peaceful and healthy. If Yin is too low (Yin deficiency), you will feel too much Yang (Heat) in your body, the heat will disrupt your sleep, cause hot flashes, night sweats and emotional issues. I use certain body acupuncture points, auricular acupuncture points and herbs to increase Yin and reduce heat for my patients. This combination of treatment always produce good results. And unlike hormone therapy, patients do not need to worry about the risk of cancer. -Dr. Chun-Ming Fu

Health Tip of The Week: Acupuncture and Herbs for Eczema

Eczema is one of the most common skin issues. About 3.5% of the population suffer from eczema. Symptoms of eczema are red, dry and itchy skin that is easily found near the joint creases of the body, such as the elbows and back sides of the knees (although it can appear anywhere). Rashes and blisters can also occur. Using steroid to treat eczema can get fast temporary pain relief, but it will come back after a couple weeks or months and be worse than before. Thus patients need to take stronger steroids to achieve the same effect as before. This will continue happen until their medical providers says they cannot give them anymore steroids because of the side effects. This leaves those sufferers not knowing what to do. Eczema patient’s body has strong heat and dampness, heat cause red, dry and itchy skin and rashes coming out; dampness cause blisters coming out. The strong heat in the body is like the water boiling in the pot. using steroids is like using a lid to cover it, you will feel the heat diminished right away, but in fact it is still boiling inside. When you stop using steroids, it’s like the lid is moved away, the heat will come out with heightened severity. The right way to solve this problem is not covering with lid, but is turning down the heat of the oven so to speak. Like acupuncture and herbal medicine reduce the heat and dampness from inside of body

Health Tip of The Week: Acupuncture for Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder patients suffer the severe shoulder pain  and limited R.O.M. (range of motion). Most of patients get injured, and then do not receive proper treatment right away. This causes the condition to get worse: more painful and more limited. For a hypothetical example, consider PatientA. At the beginning, pain scale for PatientA is 2/10, after 2 years, it increases to 7/10. At the beginning, R.O.M. abduction for PatientA was 160 degrees, after 2 years, it becomes reduced to only 30 degrees. Western medicine doctor like to use cortisone injection, but cortisone injections just temporarily relieves the pain, after couple weeks it comes back with even more severity. Get acupuncture as early as possible to prevent this problem from getting worse. The earlier you get treatments, the less treatments you’ll need. -Dr. Chun-Ming Fu

Health Tip of The Week: Neck Pain- How to Sleep on Sides

When you sleep on back, use this way:
“Roll a towel up and place it under the back of your neck to support your neck when you sleep at night. Adjust the height of the towel according to your cervical curvature and your comfort.”
But when you sleep on sides, you need a higher pillow.
Why? Let me explain: Not enough support will cause your neck injury and(or) shoulder blade injury.
Measure the length from the edge of your head to the edge of your shoulder. It should be much longer than the support of your cervical curvature.
Preparing a small pillow beside your head, when you turn on sides add the small pillow on to your regular pillow.

Health Tip of the Week: Will I Develop Dependence on Treatment?

Q: After the treatment, my pain has reduced and I feel great.  But I was worry if the pain will come back after I complete my treatment.  Or will I develop dependence on treatment just like western medicine? A:  As mentioned in Wave Theory, the continual treatment effect is like waves one after another that keeps on rising, allowing the treatments to take full effect.  When it reaches to the full effect and goal, the pain will not come back if you take a good care of your body and regular maintenance, just like once you tighten a screw it is most likely not to loosen Dr. Chun-Ming Fu

Health Tip of the Week: Different Responses to Each Acupuncture Treatment

Q: Why is my feeling after treatment different from appointment to appointment? A: Our body is not like a computer where you can get the same output from the same input.  The response of each human body is different and varies from time to time. You cannot predict how your body responds to the treatment.  Sometimes we can not even describe clearly on our own feeling toward our body .  Thus it is quite normal that you will have different feelings after every treatment. Health Tip of The Week: Prescription of Herbal Medicine (2)

After taking herbal medicine for a period of time, your body pattern will undergo changes and show improvements gradually.  Thus, it is important that you return for follow-ups so that the doctor can adjust the prescription according to your most recent condition and provide you with a new prescription after diagnosis.  As a reminder, do not take the same prescription for a long period of time without doctor’s approval as it may cause unhealthy or negative treatment effects. Health Tip of The Week: Prescription of Herbal Medicine (1)

Before herbal medicine can be prescribed, patient must undergo comprehensive examination and diagnosis by doctor to determine patient’s physical constitution through taking the pulse, checking the tongue, checking the complexion, and inquiring patient’s physical and medical history. The herbal medicine prescribed is personalized and tailored to the patient’s special needs. The effect of herbal medicine is the same as predicted by the Wave Process Theory for acupuncture treatment. A patient should continue taking herbal medicine on schedule until fully recovered. Stopping half way; taking medicine intermittently; or postponing taking medicine will reduce or even nullify the effect of herbal medicine. ……to be continued Dr. Chun-Ming Fu If you find this useful don’t forget to SHARE IT with your friends! :D And make sure to Follow Us on Twitter and Like Us on Facebook to receive important news, discounts, and health tips like this

Health Tip of The Week: The Difference Between Western and Chinese Medicine (2)

With Chinese herbal medicine, the prescription taken was adjusted accordingly by the condition of a body.   When the symptoms and health condition improves, the less amount of medication is required. The patient’s health condition gets better gradually as body’s constitution improves.    As a result, the treatment by Chinese medicine is usually with a better long-term result as it allows patient undergo changes day by day with decreased amount of medication and until the body get recovered ultimately and no longer require any medication.
